Franc-quartierVariants: Franc-quartier, Franc-quarter, free-quarter
Franc-quartier / free-quarter. A square piece similar to a canton that occupies one of the upper corners of the shield, usually the dexter and which is 3/7th parts of the width and 3.5/7th parts of the height of the shield. Almost without exception the franc-quarter is charged with one or more figures (ref rietstap pl. II, 35.). A quartered shield where only one quarter is present with the remaining 3 not divided leaving a free-standing quarter, similar to a canton but shaped like a quarter.
