The ancient banner of St. Denis, carried at the head of the French armies, from the 12th to the 15th century. According to Sir N. H. Nicolas, an oblong red flag, split into five points, described by others as a square banner of flame-coloured silk. Flown from a a gilded lance. Best to use a banner/flag with five points on the trailing edge in heraldic works to give the best chance of it being recognized.
