Hereditary title, next in rank to a Duke. The eldest son of a Marquis, by courtesy, is called Earl, or Lord of a Place, and the younger sons Lords, with the addition of their Christian name. All the daughters of a Marquis are Ladies. The armorial hearings of a Marquis are distinguished by his Coronet and Mantle.
