HERALDRY RAMBLINGS

This month you'll find some mantlings with some interesting new helmet styles. We have also included some new supporters as promised earlier. Those who have upgraded to the new X5 may already have these. In September we will be offering seven new mantles to help keep your design skills honed. No new titles are in the planning  as we continue improving on the collections we have.

STAFF NOTES

Armorial Gold's Vista viewer for WMF files is proving to be quite popular. Be sure to check out the member resources page for free access.

WHEN CAN ERMINE BE USED?

Ermine is a fur and along with its siblings, ermines, pean, erminois,  can be applied to any charge (in theory). Although I don't think you would want a human face ermine. However in "new" heraldry nothing surprises us...

-------------------------

VAIR-VAIRY

When creating a blazon that uses vair, be sure to blazon the colors/metal. Generally if "vair", it's azure and argent, but can be any heraldic color plus a metal (or fur).

PARTI PER

Arms divided by lines of partition (raguly, embattled, rayonnee etc) are referred to as 'Parted (or Parti) per'. Most contemporary Armorists drop the word parted (or Parti) and use "per" only. It is said these types of partitioned shields took their origin from the parti-coloured coats, which were actually worn as garments when Heraldry first arose. The symbolism lies in their tinctures, furs or patterns, and charges (if any are so blazoned) and not necessarily in the partition type or style; partitioning a shield in such a way was also a means of 2 or more branches of the same family being represented on one coat of arms or a reference to kinfolk such as the house of the father and the house of the mother etc. The primary aim of Heraldry was to produce the most striking effect at a glance, and the shield attitude (partitions) being adopted merely as a means of distinction between one coat and another.

A BEZANT BY ANY

OTHER NAME...

A gold roundle representing a Byzantine coin. Denoted one who had been found worthy of trust and treasure. The French on the other hand and some other countries call all roundles Bezants, but blazon the color or tincture; ie: a bezant, gules, or a bezant, azure etc. So be careful when translating a French blazon.

Corel Draw Logo

We are leaving this help tip up, as more and more of you are upgrading

your Corel Draw software to X3 or X4

Corel Draw has changed some default settings in X3 and X4 that can render your vector images black, do the same for your F9 preview and in the case of X4 display your image excessively dark.

Fixes:

  • Top Command Bar/View Select “enhanced” and not “enhanced with overprints”;

  • Top Command Bar/Tools/Color Management Color Mode for Effects-should be set at RGB (not CMYK);

  • Top Command Bar/Tools Select “Save Settings as default” ;

  • When importing AG graphics into X4, make sure you first group your image before using the F9 full screen preview (X3 imports the graphic already grouped).

Adobe Illustrator Fix for CDR files using HSB color model

Some Art was created using the HSB color model (white). Illustrator CS and greater does not recognize the HSB color model, and shows those parts as black when opened. We have converted most Art to the RGB color model, but you may find the odd image that we missed.

FIX

ungroup the image and select the black, and using your mouse click on White in your color palette. If you can't figure it out, email the office naming the image file, and we'll do it for you. Note: the glitch applies to CDR files and not WMF files.
